Ava has always been different. Born with strong telepathic abilities, she lives a very isolated life until she is offered a job with an obscure network that aids powerful Immortal Guardians in their quest to protect humanity from the psychotic vampires who prey upon them. Suddenly, she doesn’t feel so different. For the first time in her life, Ava has found a place where she belongs. She’s happy. Life is good. And when her employers invite her to join a group of other gifted ones and a handful of Immortal Guardians on a journey to another planet, it becomes absolutely fantastic. In no time at all, she is speeding across the galaxy aboard a Lasaran warship manned by two amazing alien races. It’s the dream of a lifetime… until a vicious attack by a mutual enemy of Lasara and Earth lands her alone in an escape pod with no habitable planet in sight and only one ship within range: one that carries the enemy who wants to know why the bioengineered virus they released on Earth long ago didn’t exterminate humanity and leave the planet ripe for their claiming. Jak’ri doesn’t know how long he has been a prisoner aboard the Cebaun, but he fears the enemy’s twisted experiments will soon lead them to a virus that will eradicate the Purveli people. Despair grips him until a female from Earth is taken captive and reaches out to him telepathically. The gift that Ava said caused her such misery in the past soon becomes his salvation as the two of them form a fast friendship. Determined to distract each other from the horrors of their existence, they immerse themselves in telepathic communion during the day, then seek solace and adventure together in shared dreams. As their friendship deepens into love, the two hatch a daring plot to escape their captors. But the enemy will not let them go without a fight. Can Ava and Jak’ri stand against so many and emerge victorious?

MY THOUGHTS

Ava’s story isn’t for the faint of heart. She might get to keep her Jak’ri, but the price was a bit steep and the road painful. It was kind of cool to see a crueler alien race though in a way as most of those we’ve encountered in the past have been pretty friendly. The gathendians are anything but.

Audiobook Note

Kirsten Potter an amazing narrator. I’ve heard some others that are good, but no one brings characters to such vivid life and with such distinctive voices. She’s my absolute favorite.

About the Characters

Ava is incredibly brave in the face of terrible circumstances and resilient in the most despairing of times. Jak’ri is adorably sweet and very accepting and understanding. He also appreciates strong women which is always attractive. Ziv’ri is the cute, fun, and competitive little brother who comes to adore Ava just as much as Jak’ri (thought obviously in a different way).

Things I Liked

Seeing other worlds in detail. The animal life was especially fun. Ava’s perspective as she endures the Gathendians and discovers such new and different life in the universe is endearing.

Things I Didn’t Like

For a long time I worried that Ava would be so resilient that she’d come away from her captivity with her psyche in tact, but thankfully she does end up with a little PTSD which feels more realistic.

More Thoughts

This book lines up with the previous one almost simultaneously – which makes sense given how the book two ended. It was awful and amazing to see Ava’s side of it all and how well written both this book and the last one were for them to line up perfectly, yet hide a big twist.

Does it stand alone?

Dianne Duvall does a good job writing all her books to stand alone yet flow seamlessly with the series. This book could stand alone just fine. However, this book more than most would be best read after The Segonian to follow the events better, as well as fully appreciate the intricate weaving of the little connections among the books in this series and the origin series, the Immortal Guardians.

Bottom Line

An exciting and treacherous adventure, The Purveli takes us on a journey through the best and worst the universe has to offer with an amazing other wordly backdrop.
