He nodded toward her house. “Can I talk you into sharing a snack with me while we watch a movie or something for a bit? I know you need to go to bed soon, but I’d love to spend some time with you first. I promise to keep my hands to myself.”

Stepping back, Kayla shook her head with mock disappointment. “I was going to say yes . . . but then you blew it with the hands thing.”

He chuckled. “And if I promise NOT to keep my hands to myself?”

Crossing to the back door, she opened it and offered him a dramatic bow. “Step inside, my dear sir.”

Those soft, full lips of his stretching in a smile, he did as ordered.

Laughing, Eliana handed him the sticky cloth. “If Kayla is as smart as she appears to be, you two are going to be great together. Stop stressing over the little things.”

Nick snorted. “Little things like the bizarre gift I was born with and my violent vocation?”

She made a pfft sound. “That’s nothing. Leaving the toilet seat up so she’ll fall in if she gets up to pee during the night will disturb her FAR more.”

He laughed.

Dragging his lips from hers, Nick buried his face in her neck. His arms tightened around her almost to the point of pain.

Frowning, wanting those lips on hers again, Kayla hugged him back. “Nick?”

“You scared the hell out of me today,” he murmured, his deep voice hoarse.

Her heart turned over. He would only have such a reaction if he cared about her. How had she not realized that before? “I’m sorry.”

He shook his head. “Just let me hold you a minute.”

Smiling, she snuggled against him

She looked up at him.

Nick stared back, his eyes boring into hers with a bright amber glow. “You don’t want to forget.” His voice was deeper and husky with desire that did nothing to dampen her need.

“I don’t want to forget,” she assured him, as if her tight hold on him hadn’t already made that clear. “But someone in your past DID. Someone rejected you because of who and what you are.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed with a hard swallow before he nodded.

“Who?”

He hesitated for so long she thought he wouldn’t answer. “Almost everyone I’ve ever loved,” he confessed wearily.

Her heels dropped back to the floor. Her chest tightened. And the backs of her eyes began to burn with tears she hastily blinked back.

Those five words held a wealth of sorrow.

Kayla cupped his strong jaw with one hand. “They were fools.”

Eliana clapped her hands together. “So. What’s the plan? I think the men should go hunting as usual while Dana and I stay home and have a girls’ night in with Kayla.”

Aidan shrugged. “Works for me.”

Nick hesitated. Dana and Eliana could certainly keep Kayla safe, but . . .

He sent Eliana a squinty-eyed look full of suspicion. “You aren’t going to pump her for information about our relationship, are you?”

She assumed an exaggeratedly innocent expression. “Who me? Would I do that?”

“Hell yes.”

She grinned. “Then I guess that’s a great big maybe, baby.”

Aidan and Dana laughed.

Nick groaned.
