Abandoned as a child and unable to remember her past, Morgan was raised as a hunter, one of an elite group of fighters sworn to protect humans from the dangerous paranormal creatures who invade our world…creatures such as herself. Her life changes the day she’s summoned to the Academy of Assassins, a school that trains witches and hunters to eradicate paranormals who prey on humans. Her first assignment—find and eliminate the killer who is using the Academy as their own personal hunting ground. As Morgan delves deeper into the investigation, she will need to dodge assassination attempts, avoid the distraction of romantic entanglements with the devilishly handsome security expert, Kincade, and his maddeningly overprotective teammates, while keeping the volatile magic in her blood concealed from those who would use it for their own purposes. When the danger increases and the school is threatened, Morgan must unearth her missing memories before someone finishes the job they started so long ago—killing her and unleashing a plague that will consume the world.

MY THOUGHTS

This was a good story with a good pace. There was a steady balance between plot excitement and character development. I am one for often not understanding or following the politics in a given story and this one is no different, however I think it’s just a matter of needing to reread it more carefully in this case. The world building was a little bit of a mixed bag, but I got enough for the story.

About the Characters

Morgan is a straight up badass, if for no other reason (though there are others) than the fact she’s sane despite her history. Ascher is loyal and lovable if a little sad. Kincade is a borderline complete and utter asshole. Ryder is fierce, but adorably shy off the battlefield. Atlas is intriguing and mysterious. Draven is sexy and fun, but his very nature makes me sad.

Things I Liked

I love Morgan’s spirit and the fact that she’s a hunter. Her independence presents a lot of natural drama within the team so it never feels fabricated for the sake of conflict. Every time she outwitted others or was underestimated was so very satisfying.

Things I Didn’t Like

The heirarchy among the various species makes me sad. The entire bonding thing is something I normally love, but it seems like nothing but turmoil here.

More Thoughts

Physical descriptions are very vivid and new creatures and settings are really neat. There are some moments with some characters that could have gone a lot more awkwardly or dramatically, but they went better than expected which I greatly appreciated. I was always waiting for something to happen melodramatic and ended up pleasantly surprised.

Bottom Line

This was an exciting and endearing start to a new-to-me reverse harem romance series.
